Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri Iwi Trust invites you to a series of waiata wānanga in Pōneke! Learn and strengthen your connection to our waiata, culture, and each other. Nau mai, haere mai e te whānau!
Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri Iwi Trust warmly invites our Wellington-based whānau to participate in the Wellington Waiata Wānanga 2026. These gatherings are a chance to wānanga, learn, and strengthen our shared voice as uri o Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri.
These wānanga will focus on:
Learning traditional and contemporary iwi waiata
Understanding the stories and tikanga behind each song
Building confidence in singing, harmonies, and playing guitar
Spending time with whānau in kōrero, kai and connection
Whether you’re fluent in te reo or just beginning, confident in waiata or learning the ropes – everyone is welcome.
Pōneke (Wellington) – confirmed venues and dates will be sent to registered participants.
Monthly sessions are planned from March to August 2026. Each session will include:
Waiata practice and performance
Reo Māori support
Guitar sessions for beginners and experienced players
Shared kai and whakawhanaungatanga
Your voice
A guitar (if you have one)
A notebook or lyrics folder
Your enthusiasm and aroha!
If you’re keen to support as a kaiako (teacher), guitarist, reo champion, or organiser – we’d love to hear from you. This kaupapa is about lifting each other up.
This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening cultural identity, iwi connection, and community capability through kaupapa that matter. Supported by Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri Iwi Trust as part of our cultural development kaupapa.
