Our Ngāti Mutunga Identity – Resurgence

Our journey toward the full recovery of our Ngāti Mutunga reo, waiata, and toi is now taking flight.

2021 has seen us run a series of wananga designed to continue our programme of recovery.  It has been a full-on series of weekends for our whanau.  Our reo hui have been run by Lara Sladen, Jake Thomas, and Ward Kamo.  We have been blessed with our Ngāti Toa Whanaunga Kahu and Tash Ropata delivering our Tu Whaikorero and Poupou Karanga course.  And of course, our long standing relationship with Eraia Kiel and NZMACI has seen our whakairo and raranga run on at Whakamaharatanga.

The schedule below shows how hard we’ve all been working.

Reo

  • Reo wananga 1 (15 – 17 January 2021)
  • Reo wananga 2 (21 – 23 May 2021)
  • Reo wananga 3 (23 – 25 July 2021)

Poupou Karanga/Tu Whaikorero

  • Poupou Karanga/Tu Whaikorero wananga 1 (30 April – 2 May)
  • Poupou Karanga/Te Whaikorero wananga 2 completed (28 – 30 May)

Toi / Whakairo

  • Toi / whakairo wananga 1 completed (16 – 18 April)
  • Toi / whakairo wananga 2 completed (25 – 27 June)

Of course COVID and lockdowns has thrown the remainder of year into turmoil (we have 3 more reo, 2 more poupou, and 1 more toi wananga to run).  Well be publishing an updated delivery schedule in the next month.
