Notice to Iwi - Mandate Recognition

On behalf of the Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri Iwi Trust, and our Mandate Group, I am pleased to announce our mandate to settle our long‐standing Treaty grievances with the Crown has been recognised.  This is a welcome development.

As was outlined in our Deed of Mandate, the Mandate Group now becomes the Settlement Governance Group (SGG).  The current members are:
  • Phil Seymour (Chair)
  • Nick Cameron
  • Andy Hough
  • Paula Page (Chair ‐ Iwi Trust)
  • John Kamo (Deputy Chair ‐ Iwi Trust)
The Settlement Governance Group (SGG) will be responsible for the day‐to‐day running of the Settlement process and recommending to the Iwi Trust negotiator appointments, and the outline of an Agreement in Principle (AIP) with the Crown.

Whānau, we made some commitments to you when we came out a year ago to seek mandate from you.  These included:
  • Wānanga with you to listen to your korero of our grievances and settlement expectations
  • Discussing negotiators with you
  • Setting out a timeframe for completion
  • Setting out a timeframe for continuous engagement with you during the course of settlement negotiations
In the next week the SGG will be notifying you of the first wānanga dates.    These hui will occur throughout Wharekauri and Aotearoa.  The Settlement Governance Group is targeting June / July 2015 to begin hui with you. The Iwi Trust will also be seeking ‘Expressions of Interest’ for potential governance roles within the Settlement Governance Group.
This is an exciting time for all of us as Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri.  This process of settlement needs us all engaged to make it an Iwi settlement.    I look forward to seeing you as a member of the Settlement Governance Group in the coming months.

No reira e te whanaunga, ma te Atua e manaaki, e tiaki, i nga wa katoa.

Naku noa

Paula Page
