General Manager – Unique Opportunity in Wharekauri, the Chatham Islands!

Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri Iwi Trust (the Iwi Trust) is based on Wharekauri (Chatham Islands) and represents the collective interests of Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri. It is a mandated iwi organisation that currently holds through its subsidiary Asset Holding Company, in excess of $24 million in tribal assets predominantly made up of fishing quota, investments and land holdings. The Kaupapa of the Iwi Trust includes revitalisation of Te Reo Maori, Tikanga, progressing the Treaty Settlement of historical claims, improving health and welfare, and promoting educational and vocational training for Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri.

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the General Manager will ensure the vision and strategic objectives of the Iwi Trust are achieved and maintained while being aligned to the core values of the organisation. You will oversee the continued development of distribution activities and programmes to advance the ‘hauora’ of the Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri and ensure key stakeholder relationships are positively and effectively managed. You will also work with your team to develop clear and consistent communication strategies so that the members and beneficiaries of the Iwi Trust are kept informed of key priorities, projects and outcomes. You will be doing this in a unique part of New Zealand, rich in history, culture and kaimoana!

We are looking for a strong leader and relationship builder with cultural and commercial nous; who has:

  • Experience in a senior management position or equivalent level, requiring high level strategic judgement, communication and stakeholder management skills,
  • Proven ability to build relationships and partnerships with multiple, multi-faceted stakeholders including public and private sector agencies, organisations, individuals and the wider community to achieve agreed goals,
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to promote effective engagement and participation, including successful negotiation and conflict resolution,
  • Ideally an understanding of the importance of Tikanga Māori and the ability to ‘walk the talk’ within the local community.
